Stairscase Support
Framed Support Staircases
Framed Support structure is one of the most common building techniques employed to staircase design. After the stair is installed, walls are framed and sheet rocked underneath to enclose the opening created by the staircase. This system of support allows for many different options. Often times there will be storage, a closet, or even a half bath contained within the space beneath the stair.
Open-Under Staircases
Open Under Support structure is a nice design solution which opens the interior space of a room allowing for perhaps the incorporation of other interior decorating elements such as foliage, furniture and art. This type of stair support is framed along one side of the staircase but the space created beneath the stair is left exposed to the expanse of the room.
Free Standing Staircases
A free-standing staircase is the most dramatic design solution. The staircase becomes its own support system. This type of staircase is not anchored to any walls as it seems to float in the space of the room. This type of design requires more engineering than the previous support solutions and thus becomes more cost prohibitive than a framed or open under support system.
